Digital Copy of your Passport

2009-06-09Where in the world am I today?: In Ketchikan, AK aboard the STAR Princess

Today’s tip is something I was reminded of by fellow performer Tony Daro in the last few days here aboard the STAR Princess. The story went like this… He arrived at the ship, in Cozumel with his watch set to Cozumel time. The ship however had just arrived from the East Coast and was still on East Coast time. He dropped his stuff off at the ship and took his cruise card and some money back in to Cozumel to go shopping. When he got back in time (Cozumel Time) to get back on the ship he discovered that the ship had departed (on Eastern Time) and he missed the ship. His luggage, his wallet, his passport, everything was on the ship.

He was able to contact the port agent who helped him arrange to fly on to the ship’s next destination, charged the flight to his onboard account (because his credit card and his wallet were still on the ship) and then proceeded to an internet cafe where he printed out a copy of his passport that he keeps on-line. Having the ability to go to any internet cafe and print out a copy of his passport basically saved his bacon.

Now there are a few different ways you could go about putting a copy of your passport on-line. Tony scanned the document then emailed it to his Yahoo (web based) email account where he then proceeded to put it in a special saved folder so he could access it at any time. If you’ve got a website and know a little bit about uploading files, you could create a specific password protected directory to hold the document. Those Mac Users who have a Moble Me account through Apple could easily store it in their iDisk.

However you decide to do it. I highly recommend having some way to be able to access a copy of your passport on-line just in case something goes sideways and you find yourself stranded needing it.

    Excellent Idea!
I had read that a notarized copy of your passport would get you across borders.
However, I’m wondering if just a copy of it like this works then?
I often bring my passport ashore , for this very reason.

It worked for Tony when he needed it in a pinch…

  3. […] Having a copy of this list that you can access on-line (much like a copy of your passport that I discussed here) would allow you to access it at any internet cafĂ© in the case of emergency. Share this […]
