A couple of stops worth making on YouTube

2009-11-05Where in the world am I today?: Flying from Vancouver to Costa Rica to join up with the Island Princess.

Right… Three things I wanted to point people towards on YouTube that I’ve either been a part of or else found very amusing…

The first – the Clown v. Mime videos available on my friend Rob William’s corner of the YouTube Universe –

http://www.youtube.com/user/clopshop

Back in July Rick Kunst and Rob Williams came up with this idea for a dark comedy duo, one being a somewhat disgruntled clown and the other being an over exuberant Mime. We were all in Red Deer performing at Centrefest and I had my video camera with me so I offered to shoot one of the ideas that they had bouncing around. We shot it, edited it and threw it up on Youtube in less than a day and response was so good to it that we did another before the end of the Festival. Rick and Rob got together again at the beginning of October to brainstorm more ideas for this unlikely duo and shot some more footage which was sent to me for editing… I’ve gotten four different pieces put together three of which are up on Rob’s section of youtube and had a fifth in the works that will hopefully be done soon. This is just a fun example of having an idea and making it happen. It’s also pretty funny, so I’d encourage you to go have a look and perhaps send a few friends by to see these shorts.

Next up in the youtube viewing department is a music video by Boothby Graffoe entitled ‘A to Zzzz.’ I met Boothby on one of the Ships and Dip Cruises that were put on by the Barenaked Ladies and have great memories of him performing this particular song at a songwriters workshop that happened during the cruise. It’s now been turned into a video and Boothby first sent me to this link –

– and challenged me to come up with an A to Z comment for the comment stream this was my effort –

Amazing Boothby!
Cannabis derived enjoyment for Global happiness?
Inspirational jabberings?
Kaleidoscopic laments musically nailed?
Or possibly quizzical ramblings suitably timed under varying wavelengths?
Xanadu-inspired yarns zigzagging!

He then sent me to a second version of the video that was of better quality at this link –

– and I did the exercise again coming up with this comment –

A big creative dilemma erupts from gravitating here.
I just know learned-masters never oppose possibly questioning reality.
Still…
The undercurrent’s violent when x-ing your zoology.

It was a fun challenge to come up with a semi-coherant string of words that started with a, then b, then c etc. all the way up to z, so if you’ve got some time and are feeling creative I’d suggest trying it as an exercise in stretching your brain in a different direction.

Finally, I wanted to point you in the direction of this video that my kids showed me… It’s just one of those videos that you watch and shake your head after… Crazy!

I found this other link claiming that the video above is a hoax, but still… It’s the sort of stunt that I’d love to believe was possible! Goes back to my days of loving Evil Knievel!

Happy viewing! Got some other videos on youtube that you’ve loved recently? Put links in the comment section so we can all enjoy them!

Current Images

2009-07-27Where in the world am I today?: Driving from Red Deer to Vancouver Hubba-Dubba-Dubba…

In the world of promo and marketing having up-to-date images and video is pretty important. I think this is in part why I became a part-time photographer/videographer. It’s a part of the business that I really enjoy and although I know there are times to get a professional in to do the job, I still love watching and growing in my skills with these two mediums.

I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures and documenting events in my life and love doing video edits as well… The picture that accompanies this blog came out of performing at Peacefest in Peace River, Alberta a couple of weeks ago. I handed my camera to the guy who was in charge of bringing me in to do the gig and told him to snap away… He caught many great images from my time in Peace River.

More recently, this past weekend in fact, I brought my video camera along with me and had the opportunity to put together a couple of fun videos with Rob Williams and Rick Kunst. I was talking to both Rob and Rick about my enjoyment of video work and we made time in and around performances at Centrefest in Red Deer to produce two ‘Clown v. Mime’ videos which can be seen here –

Now these aren’t specifically promotional videos for any of the people that were involved with the project, at least not directly related to the performances that compose the main source of our regular income, but they were a fun side project that allowed us to noodle around with some funny ideas and get them uploaded to YouTube fairly quickly and painlessly and allowed us to get a little bit extra out of the weekend we were already spending together.

In this day and age when both still and video cameras are, financially speaking, with in the grasp of most performers it startles me that more people aren’t doing interesting things with this technology. In a world where YouTube has become a daily source for entertainment content for many people it really is an opportunity to flex your creative muscles from time to time and generate a bit of up-to-date content.

Even if it isn’t specifically related to the show you do, I think there’s a real value in putting out creative and funny content to the world. Ya never know… It might just be the next big thing on YouTube.

YouTube Videos I watched this week.

Youtube has become a replacement for TV these days and an amazing resource tool. I’m a huge fan of how one video clip leads to another and then to another… While researching hat manipulations while prepping for a teaching session with Andrew Lee Potts on Tuesday I was checking up some videos that I thought might be useful resources for him to check out –

This first one is of Kris Kremo in action with a hat, cigar and ball routine then goes into his three top hat routine and finishes with his cigar box routine… It’s a classic stuff which may look a bit dated but is still pretty magical.

I also mentioned how Johnny Depp did a sort of street performance piece in the film Benny and Joon which starts with a bit of hat manipulation… Andrew seemed interested in seeing this, so I tracked down this clip on Youtube for him…

A few years ago now Chris Bliss made a big splash with this video of a juggling routine to a soundtrack provided from the Beatles Abby Road Album.

This video really seemed to hit a chord with the public, though a lot of jugglers were left unimpressed by the actual technical level of juggling. Jason Garfield went as far as to create the Chris Bliss Diss Video in which he created a routine to the same music but used five balls instead of three.

One of my favorite juggling videos in recent years shows off the juggling talents of Vova Galchenko and the video mastery of Mark Bakalor. The video was featured in Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The Ellen Degeneres Show, ESPN, Nightline and more and is amazing!

One of my all time favorite beginning to end juggling routines has to be AirJazz’s club juggling routine. I got to meet Peter, Kezia and Jon in 1985 while traveling with Holly Greeley, then Championships Director of the International Jugglers Association. Their club is still one of my favorite
